What Causes a Pool to Turn Green?

A green pool usually comes down to one or more factors working together, rather than a single cause. Proper assessment matters — treating the wrong cause wastes time and chemicals.

The Process

Not every recovery follows exactly the same sequence or requires the same treatment — the right approach depends on condition, and treatment may need to be repeated.

    Apply treatment based on condition and test results.

    Run filtration as required to clear suspended contamination.

    Break up algae on pool surfaces where needed.

    Clean

    Vacuum, remove debris and clean or backwash filtration where appropriate.

    Monitor

    Reassess and repeat treatment where necessary.

Filtration & Equipment

Chemicals alone may not recover a pool if filtration is inadequate, the filter is clogged, circulation is poor, the pump isn't operating correctly, or the chlorinator isn't producing enough sanitiser. Severe Green Pools

Severely neglected pools may need more than a single treatment — very heavy algae, a large debris load, poor filtration, high contamination or extreme water imbalance can all extend the process. In some situations, repeated treatment and filtration cycles are required before the pool responds. Depending on the condition of the pool, additional treatment, filtration work, or in some cases water replacement may be recommended after assessment — this isn't a routine step, and it's only considered where it genuinely makes sense for that pool.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Recovery time depends on the severity of the algae, water condition, filtration performance, equipment operation, pool volume, contamination and how the water responds to treatment. Some pools improve quickly, while severe cases may require repeated treatment and filtration over several visits or days. We won't promise a fixed timeframe before we've actually seen the pool.

After Recovery / Prevention

Once a pool is back under control, keeping sanitiser, balanced chemistry, filtration, circulation and regular cleaning on track helps reduce the likelihood of the problem recurring — though it can't be ruled out entirely. Ongoing care is best handled through Pool Cleaning & Maintenance and Water Testing & Balancing.
